A Day in the Life of the Florida Youth Council

The Florida Youth Council is excited to announce that they have just finished their latest project,
A Day in the Life of the Florida Youth Council.

The Florida Youth Council is a group of youth (age 15-17) and emerging leaders (age 18-30) with disabilities or special health care needs that live in Florida. The Florida Youth Council is all about getting youth and emerging leaders involved in self-advocacy, peer mentoring and other activities that will improve the quality of life for youth and emerging leaders with disabilities in Florida. The program provides a means for youth and emerging leaders to decide what issues are important to their generation, to express those issues in their state and local communities, and to develop strategies to solve them.

All the members of the Council took video of themselves throughout a typical day for them. All of their videos were combined into an exciting montage that shows all of the members just living their lives. The video’s tag line is, “We may be different, but we are all the same!”

The video is available at the FYC YouTube account, here. Please go and check it out. We appreciate everyone’s support

This publication, which has been created by youth, for youth, offers friendly, peer to peer guidance for youth and emerging leaders that want to take more of a leadership role in the IEP process. It includes information about the important pieces that each IEP should include, how youth can prepare to participate in their IEP meeting, and most importantly, why it is so essential for youth with disabilities to take control of planning their futures.

"Navigating Your IEP" is available online in pdf format by following this link. We encourage you to share it with youth in your family and your community, and to give us any feedback you may have about what we've put together.
