Annual Family Cafe Conference

This one-of-a-kind event was developed six years ago with the goal to help educate families on the services available to them and help them learn how to effectively access these services. With the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, this event, which began in 1999, has become a key component in the lives of individuals with disabilities in Florida. With the investment of the Governor’s Office, the Family Cafe has been able to affect the lives of over 15,000 individuals across the state through education and training. Conference attendees are given an opportunity to network and collaborate with other families and state agency personnel to discuss their concerns, share best practices and gain a better overall understanding of how to utilize the service delivery system. Additionally, because of the participation of the Department of Education, Department of Children and Families, Agency for Health Care Administration, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and Department of Health, the Family Café is able to offer free registration to the conference. Furthermore, attendees are able to apply for financial assistance in the form of lodging and mileage reimbursement on a first come-first served basis until funding has diminished. The Family Café was proud to have provided financial assistance to approximately 3,000 individuals for the 2005 event. The highlight of this conference is the Governor’s Summit on Disabilities hosted by Governor Jeb Bush. Each year, Governor Bush embraces the Annual Family Café Conference by speaking to a crowd of thousands, addressing the issues that face them every day. This event is impressive and has grown steadily over the last seven years. It is anticipated that over 8,000 individuals will be in attendance at this year’s event.
