Sunday Keynote: Champions Rebuilt: The Courage to be Different with Dorian Willes

Dorian Willes is a person with a disability, a survivor of gun violence, a body builder, a Paralympic athlete that competes in the sport of skeleton, and a parent of a child with a disability. From a life of gangs and drugs, Dorian has undergone a radical transformation to become a world class athlete and model of resiliency and determination.

Join us as he shares his story in 21 bullet points: one for each of the bullets that struck him and changed his life forever. Each bullet represents a decision that impacted his life, and set him on the course from a life of drugs and gang violence to an existence based on health, wellness, and inspiring others.

As he takes us on his journey, Dorian will talk about how the decisions he ultimately made changed his life forever, as he faced the challenges of being both a person with a disability, and a parent of a child with his own disabilities. Learn how he embraced his disability and his circumstances to fulfill his dreams, and become a champion rebuilt.

Mental Health and Secondary Transition: What Families Need to Know

Youth with mental health disabilities are often at risk for dropping out of high school, leading to poor post-school outcomes, such as employment and post-secondary education. This presentation provides an overview of the role mental health plays in secondary transition for students with emotional/behavioral disabilities (E/BD) or mental health concerns, including key elements of a successful transition. Utilizing expertise from two discretionary projects, one focused on supporting students with E/BD (SEDNET), and one focused on secondary transition (Project 10), the presentation is tailored to identify resources and supports available to students and families during secondary transition.

Get the Skills to Land your First Job or Advance in your Current Job

Many of us think of skills as special abilities that are needed to complete a job, such as a pilot’s ability to fly a plane, or a mechanic’s ability to repair a car. However, many of the most important skills needed in today’s workplace are those that help us work well with others, manage time and resources, or adapt to change. These are “soft skills,” and this workshop will review the importance of having those essential soft skills to get and keep a job.
